Material FAQs

What is Solidwool?

Solidwool is a unique, composite material made from wool and bio-resin. You can read more about it here.

Where is Solidwool made?

All Solidwool products are made in the UK, at our workshop in Devon. We are mindful in the way we source all our components, the British Ash legs are hand turned locally, and the steel frames are made in Peterborough.

It is believed that around 95% of Herdwick sheep, who’s fleece create our distinctive Herdwick Solidwool are located within 14 miles of Coniston in the Central Lake District. The beautiful black and white Welsh Mountain sheep are located, you guessed it, in Wales.

What is a bio resin and why do you use it?

When Solidwool began, we knew we wanted to find a new way of working with wool, a sustainable resource. To turn wool into Solidwool we use resin, the resins we currently use are classed as bio-resins. They have a 50% bio-based renewable content, sourced from waste streams of other industrial processes, such as wood pulp and bio-fuel production. Our environmentally conscientious resin manufacturer claims a 33% reduction in Carbon Footprint and Greenhouse Gas Emissions during manufacture over traditional resins. Our aim is to one day produce a 100% natural composite material.

Will the material look the same on all products?

Because we are working with a natural material, there can be some variation between Solidwool products. We currently use Herdwick wool who’s fleece is a grey colour. So, if you were to buy a set of chairs, each one will have a subtle difference in the appearance of the wool, but will fit perfectly together. Our Welsh Mountain products have more variation, as you will see from our photography. This ranges from ‘light’ pieces with a few dark flecks, to dramatic ‘wild’ pieces containing lots of dark fleece. We have reference images of all our chairs and tables to allow you to choose the exact ones. To find out more please email us.

Is the material scratch resistant?

Solidwool is not scratch resistant, however the lighter guard hairs and natural variation seen in Solidwool often disguise small surface marks and scratches. When cleaning, avoid using abrasive cleaning tools and abrasive or chemical products. The surface can be refinished if necessary.

How do I care for and maintain my Solidwool furniture?

General cleaning:  Wipe clean with a damp non-abrasive cloth and use a dry cloth to absorb any residual moisture. On the occasion where liquid spillages occur, wipe up as soon as possible with a clean cloth. To maintain the oiled ash legs, we recommend Osmo Spray Cleaner.  It cares for the oil finish on the legs without drying out the wood.  Do not use cleaning products containing harsh chemicals or bleach on the wooden legs or Solidwool material.
