Wool is not just for wearing.
With the Campaign for Wool’s ‘’Wool Week’’ in full swing we outline why, for Solidwool, Wool is not just for wearing.
Historically the coarse but strong and hard wearing fleeces of the UK’s highland sheep were used in the UK carpet industry. Unfortunately demand isn’t what it once was. The prices that highland farmers collect for their clip at market are low. The difference between the costs of shearing and the sale price of the fleece are not that great. In a way, you could almost consider the fleece a waste product of the Highland Sheep Farming industry.
We seek to change this. These coarse and strong fleeces should once more be considered a renewable resource. We wanted to rethink their use. Combining this desire to add value to a sustainable natural resource with our interests in sustainable manufacturing materials and UK manufacture, we created Solidwool.
Solidwool exists to support the Hill Farmers of the UK by using their lower grade fleece as the reinforcement of our Solidwool composite materials. A beautiful and sustainable material, it can be considered in place of Injection Moulded Polymers (Plastics) and fibreglass for large or structural parts in low to medium volumes where tooling investment has to remain modest.
Key Solidwool Features:
Wool is a natural and sustainable resource.
The resins we use have a high Bio Content, achieved with reclaimed Bio Resins from other industries. This considerably reduces the carbon footprint and toxicity of creating composite materials. We believe ‘bio’ represents the future for the composites industry.
100% natural resins are available, and we will be using these in the very near future. This is exciting for Solidwool, as it will mean a 100% biodegradable composite material.
Structural properties equal to fibreglass
For a given thickness Solidwool is comparable to fibreglass in strength.
The combination of our wool reinforcement and resin technology has resulted in a composite that is not as brittle (as fibreglass). Solidwool has higher impact resistance than a fibreglass equivalent.
Unique and Beautiful
A unique aesthetic. There is currently no other production material like this.
Manufactured in the UK and Buckfastleigh
All materials and product development is carried out in Buckfastleigh, Devon.
The Hembury Chair is our first product to showcase our Solidwool material. A contemporary design, with metal sub frame and Ash legs, it is inspired by the original mid century fibreglass chairs. It is designed and manufactured in Devon, all other components are UK sourced.
As well as developing further furniture and houseware products, we are seeking collaborators who want to incorporate Solidwool into their product ranges.
Hembury Chair is now available for pre-order. We expect to have stock in December.
RRP is £450.
